Welcome to DJing in Corvallis. :-) This swing DJ training program will guide you from beginner to someone who is comfortable putting together a 2-hour set on the fly. Levels 1 and 2 are designed to help you become comfortable learning the soundscape of swing music and get you playing in front of dancers.

DJs : Level 1

Let's get started. For your first set at Corvallis Swing, do the following:

  1. Find 5 to 7 songs (about 20 minutes of music) in the standards list that make you want to dance.
    • All songs must be slower than 183 bpm
    • All songs must be faster than 117 bpm
    • At most, only 1 song can be faster than 180 bpm
  2. Buy the songs. This is required.
    • If you're not willing to spend $1 to get a song, it's not worth playing!
    • Find the songs on Amazon, Rhapsody, iTunes or somewhere better.
  3. Put the songs in an order that feels good to you.
  4. Listen to the songs. Dance to them in your home. Rearrange the order until you are happy with it.
  5. If you have questions, ask the DJ coordinator. :-)

At the dance

As a first-time DJ, your set will start in the middle of the dance; if there are 3 DJs, you will be the 2nd DJ to play.
Bring your laptop or music player.
The DJ coordinator or the other DJs will help get you plugged in to the mixer.

Editor's note: If you are the first person to follow these instructions, log how much time you spend making this happen, so that future DJs know about how much time to allocate. I am guessing this will take at least 4 hours.

DJs : Level 2

Follow the same rules as Level 1, but now find 10 songs (about 30 minutes of music) in the standards list. You can reuse some of the songs from your first set; aim for at least 5 new songs.
